After a long journey, Ален arrives at the Usher mansion to visit his old friend, Родерик Ашер. Upon arriving, however, he discovers that Родерик and his sister, Мэдлин, have been afflicted with a mysterious болезнь: Roderick's senses have become painfully acute, в то время как Мэдлин has become nearly catatonic. That evening, Родерик tells his guest of an old Usher family curse: any time there has been more than one Usher child, all of the siblings have gone insane and died ужасно deaths.
