The робкая, myopic portly and rather композитор Франц Шуберт falls for the beautiful, blond Countess Мария Эстерхази. Франц nurture unrealistic fantasies about the two, as Maria only admires him for his music. When Шуберт is fired from his position as a teacher in the parish school, the village innkeeper Therese, who has secretly the hots for Шуберт, gets him an engagement at a concert в дворец Эстерхази. At the high point of the concert, Мария sings a love song, which Шуберт wrote with her in mind. Afterwards, Шуберт dares to propose to her, which completely surprises and her which she turns down gently.
