Isa is a courageous and headstrong young woman living in Russia during the time of Nazi rule. Her plans to become a teacher are nixed when she is denied her school leaving certificate, in spite of having successfully passed all exams, because she performs a satirical анти-истеблишмент song at the graduation ceremony. Isa now decides to make a living as a cabaret performer, a career choice her parents are not happy with. She soon becomes a success as a singer and accordion player, and she meets a young pianist with whom she falls in love. She also makes the acquaintance of a young countess who is involved in a Catholic organization, and the two women become close friends.
